The Bulldogs claim seventh straight league title Lake Natoma, Calif. -- The Gonzaga rowing team captured its seventh straight WCC rowing championship Friday afternoon at Lake Natoma. Gonzaga accumulated 30 points to finish in first place overall, followed by San Diego, which finished with 23 to capture second for the fifth straight year and sixth time in seven championships. Santa Clara finished third overall with 13 points followed by Loyola Marymount and Saint MaryÕs.
The Bulldogs claimed first place in all three races, claiming the I-Eight event with a time of 6:39.70, a mere .41 seconds ahead of runner-up San Diego who finished with a time of 6:40.11. Loyola Marymount would take thrid place in the I-Eight heat with a time of 6:43.51, followed by Santa Clara with a time of 7:01.72 and Saint MaryÕs with a time of 7:21.77.
In the II-Eight event, Gonzaga finished first with a time of 7:00.70, while San Diego collected second place with a time of 7:11.53 and Santa Clara took third finishing in 7:19.77. Loyola Marymount and Saint MaryÕs did not enter boats in the II-Eight race.
The Bulldogs would also capture the I-Four event with a time of 7:41.00, while Saint MaryÕs took second place with a time of 7:44.29. San Diego finished in third place with a time of 7:54.61, while LMU finished fourth, finishing in a time of 8:22.63 followed by Santa Clara, which finished with a time of 8:38.28 to round out the races. The Bulldogs were rewarded for their first place finish by landing three members on the all-conference team in Cynthia Savoca, Breah Neimiec and Maria Bokulich. San Diego also placed three members on the all-conference team in Kim Cupini, Kelly Vanek and coxswain Kirsten Davis. Rounding out the all-conference team were LMUÕs Vanessa Glendenning, SMCÕs Breanne Jackson, and Santa ClaraÕs Amanda Kremer. San DiegoÕs Leeanne Crain was named the Coach of the Year.
