Apr. 1 -- The Gonzaga University men's and women's varsity crew will head to San Diego this weekend to compete in the 2002 San Diego Crew Classic as Mission Bay. Both Gonzaga's men and women will compete in the Cal Cup Regatta.

The Gonzaga men have been seeded number one in their Saturday heat with boats from Santa Clara, Washington State, Puget Sound, Massachusetts, Colorado and Chapman also in the Bulldogs heat. Orange Coast College and Western Washington also drew number one seeds in their heats. The top two teams in each heat will advance to the Cal Cup Grand Final on Sunday. Last year Gonzaga placed third in the Cal Cup Grand Final behind Trinity (Conn.) and UC Davis.

The Gonzaga women have been seeded number three in their Saturday heat behind North Carolina and Kansas State in the two top spots. Villanova, Temple, Orange Coast College and Saint Mary's round out GU's first day heat. Duke and Massachusetts were awarded number one seeds in the other two heats. The top two boats in each heat will advance to the Cal Cup Grand Final on Sunday. Last year Gonzaga placed fifth in the Cal Cup Grand Final with Tulsa winning the event.

While Gonzaga's varsity crews will be in San Diego, the remaining members will compete in the Husky Invitational on Saturday morning in Seattle. Racing will be held on Montlake Cut and will consist of Gonzaga's junior varsity and novice boats. Gonzaga returns home on April 13 to host Western Washington in a dual regatta.
