Mar 13- The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing teams opened the 004 season with a regatta against the University of British Columbia on the Frasier River in Richmond, B
lt;bgt;Pictured:lt;/bgt;lt;igt;Gonzaga won seven of fifteen distance pieces on Saturday against UBC.lt;/igt; lt;pgt; Mar 13- The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing teams opened the 004 season with a regatta against the University of British Columbia on the Frasier River in Richmond, B.C. The regatta consisted of three distance pieces of 1,600 meters, 1,000 meters and 00 meters with Gonzaga competing boats in the men's varsity 8, men's junior varsity 8, women's varsity 8, women's junior varsity 8 and women's novice 8. lt;pgt; The Gonzaga men's varsity 8 consisting of coxswain Elaine Parry, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Max Malotky, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Derek Clemmensen, Connor Barry and bow David Hinshaw was defeated by one length in the 1,600 meter piece before regrouping and winning the 1,000 meter piece by lengths. UBC was able to claim varsity 8 honors with a win in the 00 meter piece by three seats. lt;pgt; The Gonzaga women's varsity 8 consisting of coxswain Courtney Serpa, stroke Maria Bokulich, Carolyn Schepper, Kari Durgan, Jessica Kocarnik, Kristi Aamodt, Karen O'Hagan, Jenni Cooper and box Mariah Smith-Miloff was defeated in all three distance races on the afternoon. lt;pgt; Gonzaga's men's junior varsity 8 and women's novice 8 swept all three distance races while UBC claimed victory in the 1,000 meter and 00 meter distance in the women's junior varsity 8. Gonzaga won the 1,600 meter piece in the women's junior varsity 8. lt;pgt; Gonzaga will return to action next weekend when it will split up its teams. The men's and women's varsity boats will travel to California to compete in the WCC Challenge while Gonzaga's junior varsity and novice men will head to Pullman, Wash., to face Washington State. Gonzaga's junior varsity and novice women will entertain Washington State on Saturday, March 0, at Silver Lake. lt;Pgt;
