INDIANAPOLIS -- Pepperdine University and the University of San Francisco were among the teams selected by the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee to participate in the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships Regionals. The Waves earned a No. 2 seed in the East Regional in Gainesville, Florida, while the Dons are seeded No. 12 in the West Regional at the New Mexico State Golf Course in Las Cruses, New Mexico.
Along with the No. 5 nationally ranked Pepperdine Waves, the East Regional also includes top-seed and No. 1-ranked Duke along with third seed and No. 6 Washington.
Led by head coach Laurie Gibbs and junior Carolina Llano, Pepperdine enters regional play seeking its sixth NCAA Championships appearance in the last seven years.
The Waves had their streak of five consecutive NCAA Championships appearances snapped last year after finishing 12th at the NCAA West Regional Championship in Stanford, California.
Pepperdine's best-ever showing at the regionals came in 2002 when it tied for first place at the NCAA West Regionals. In 2003, the Waves placed fourth at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Arizona, and went on to the nationals where they finished second.
Three regional tournaments will be conducted May 5-7 to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition, and all national championships policies will apply.
A total of 324 participants have been selected for the regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals May 17-20. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each region.
The championships finals will be held at Sunriver Resort on the Meadows Course, Sunriver, Oregon, hosted by Oregon State University and Sunriver Resort.
