Pepperdine edged Hofstra -0 in the first round of the FIU Fun and Sun Classic, while Saint Mary's defeated Nevada 76-73 at home. Portland dropped their second straight to Miami, 84-63 and San Diego began the Surf and Slam Classic with a 6-8 win over Georgetown. lt;pgt; lt;bgt;LMU 63, Northwestern 4lt;/bgt;lt;brgt; The Loyola Marymount University women's basketball team kept its home record unblemished with a 63-4 win over Northwestern University in Day 1 of the LMU * Marina del Rey Marriott Beach Classic on Sunday night at Gersten Pavilion. The Lions remain undefeated, -0, at home this season. Sophomore Bianca Ziemann and senior Kate Murray tied for the game's leading scorer with 16 points each. lt;pgt; Senior Adrianne Slaughter scored the first field goal of the game for the Lions (9- Overall) after collecting an assist from junior Mary Turner. Northwestern (6-4 Overall) took its only lead of the game shortly after on a three-pointer by Michelle Zylstra. It was one of two long range field goals for Zylstra in the game. Melissa Culver's lay-up and a three-pointer by AJ Glasauer gave the Wildcats a four point advantage (8-4) with just under 1 minutes remaining in the half. lt;pgt; LMU regained the lead as Jenni Smith drained one of her two three pointers and the Lions never looked back. They took a 34-3 advantage into the halftime break with Ziemann as the leading scorer with 1 points. Ziemann was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor in the first 0 minutes with all four field goals coming from beyond the arc. Her four three-pointers was a new career single-game high for the guard from Huntington Beach, Calif. lt;pgt; The Lion defense turned up the heat in the second half holding the Wildcats to a mere eight field goals and 9 percent shooting from the floor as a team. The Lions enjoyed their largest lead of the night, 1 points (63-4), as sophomore Rachael Ziemann converted her only two free-throw attempts of the night with 4 seconds left in regulation. lt;pgt; For the Lions, Murray's 16 points came on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor while also collecting five rebounds and three assists. Bianca Ziemann ended her night going -for-8 from the floor and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Like Murray she also had five rebounds to go along with two assists and and two steals. Rachael Ziemann was the third Lion to finish scoring in double figures with 10 points off the bench. The Lion bench continues its hot hand of late. The Gaels jumped out to a 74-70 lead in overtime and hung on for the victory, which included six overtime points by Triola Jackson.
