Former Major League Soccer star Stephen Rammel, fresh from a three-year stint as the top assistant at UCLA, is the new head men's soccer coach at Saint Mary's College.

One of Major League Soccer's top players in 1996, Rammel was an all-star with DC United, which won the MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup. He scored 14 goals and four assists to rank eighth in the league in scoring (32 points). Rammel led the league with six game-winning goals. He was traded the following year to the Colorado Rapids, where he helped take his team again to the MLS Championship game. Rammel retired in April 1998 to assume the assistant coaching position at UCLA.

A native of New Jersey and a graduate of Rutgers, Rammel helped guide the Bruins to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the College Cup semifinals in 1999. As a college player, he led Rutgers to an NCAA semis in 1989 and to the NCAA Championship game against UCLA in 1990. He garnered first-team All-American honors as a senior in 1990 and was also the runner-up for the Hermann Trophy, given to the nation's top player. That season he was the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and was a member of Soccer America's Top 10 College Players. He was the Parade Magazine National Prep Player of the Year and an All-American in 1985-86. He was also a member of the U.S. Youth Team.
