It was announced by Commissioner Michael Gilleran that Robert Milano, Sr., has been named the West Coast Conference Coordinator of Baseball Umpires. In the newly created position he will select and develop individuals qualified to officiate WCC baseball contests, assign umpires for conference baseball games hosted by WCC institutions, and oversee a program of local evaluators.

Milano is a fixture in Bay Area baseball, coaching in Northern California for over 36 years. Most recently, Milano was the head coach of the University of California baseball team from 1977-99. During that span he garnered PAC-10 Coach of the Year honors twice (1980 & 1992) and won a Pac-10 championship in 1980, followed by a third place finish in the College World Series the same year. Milano has also been an integral part of USA baseball, serving as an assistant coach on the 1988 USA Olympic Gold Medal team.

“It speaks volumes to the status of WCC baseball to have a person like Bob Milano to fill this position,” said WCC Associate Commissioner Don Ott. “He is a nationally recognized baseball figure who will be well-respected by the league coaches. With his knowledge of the sport and strong administrative skills, Bob will be appreciated by the umpires. He’s a good man.”
