May 31-Gonzaga University senior Nate Gold has been named one of eight participants in this year's NCAA Home Run Challenge to take place on Thursday, June 13, at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Gold who led all NCAA players this season with 33 home runs was one of four Division I players selected to compete. The competition will also consist of the top two home run hitters from both the Division II and Division III ranks. The competition will air live on June 13 on ESPN at 6 p.m. (PST) from Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium.lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13; Gold finished the 00 season setting a new school and West Coast Conference record for home runs in a season en route to earning West Coast Conference Player of the Year honors. Gold's 76 RBI also set a new school record and currently rank 13th in the nation. The Centerville, Utah, native was recently named a semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and the Rotary Smith Award, but awards recognizing the top player in collegiate baseball.lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13; Joining Gold in Omaha will be Brad Eldred of Florida International (9 HR), Bubba Lavender of Morehead State (4 HR), Ryan Kenning of New Mexico State (4 HR), Heath Mason of Carson-Newman (0 HR), Junior Medina of Stonehill (19 HR), Todd Meyer of Alvernia ( HR) and Shaun Rice of Ohio Wesleyan (18 HR).lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13; The NCAA, in conjunction with Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, is hosting the third annual event as a kick off to the opening ceremonies for the 00 College World Series. To help kick off the event Rawlings has invited baseball Hall of Famer and Manager of the 000 Olympic Gold Medal winning baseball team, Tommy Lasorda, to participate in the festivities. The winner of the NCAA Home Run Challenge will win a two-year equipment and apparel endorsement contract from Rawlings Sporting Goods. In addition, Rawlings will provide a $1,000 donation to the general scholarship fund of each of the eight participants' institutions. lt;Pgt;
