Ian Solof, assistant cross country coach at the University of Portland, has been named Male Runner of the Year by United States Track and Field of Oregon and its Long Distance Running Committee. He will receive the award this Saturday at a Banquet in Newport.

Solof, 29, is in his seventh year as the women's distant coach and has led his women's team to five straight West Coast Conference titles.

He finished 29th at the cross country national championships in February and ran the 10,000 meters in 29 minutes and 42 seconds at the Stanford Invitational in March. He set the Pear Blossom 10-mile record of 49 minutes and 49 seconds when he ran the road race in Medford last April.

Solof's next challenge will be competing in the USA Marathon Championships at the New York City Marathon Nov. 4.
