The University of San Diego men's team won their home cross country invitational on September 8. The Toreros finished in first and second place in the men's individual 5K race, with Antonio Lopez clocking in at 15:36.6 and Steve Trudelle crossing the finish line at 16:13.

Lopez's time (15:36.6) is a new USD record for the 5K. The record was previously set by Bobby Gomez at the 1997 USD Invitational at Morley Field in a time of 15:45.

San Jose State earned second place in the men's team race, followed by Point Loma Nazarene, Alliant International and Pepperdine. Rounding out the eight-team field were Loyola Marymount and Occidental tied for sixth and Christian Heritage College in eighth.

The University of Hawaii and San Jose State won a share of the women's team title in the 5K race. Host San Diego came in fourth, with Pepperdine finishing in sixth and Loyola Marymount in seventh.

Pepeprdine's Chris Carter was the only WCC player to finish in the top 10 individually, clocking in at 19:47 for 10th place.
